Gord Skinner leaves a strong impression

Gord Skinner was a long-time member of the YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford
The YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford lost a longtime friend on Nov. 17, 2010 with the passing of Gord Skinner at age 95. His 85-year tenure at the YMCA is believed to be among the longest memberships in Canada.

Gord’s dedication to fitness was legendary. He was stronger than men half his age and won international powerlifting competitions well into his senior years. But Gord’s strength extended far beyond the physical. The retired optician also showed remarkable strength of character by helping those less fortunate.

He gave to the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign every year since its inception in 1994. YMCA Strong Kids raises financial support for children, teens and families who are unable to afford the full cost of participating in a YMCA program or activity. Gord was also a YMCA Heritage Club member, where planned giving creates a longtime legacy of support.

Motivated by his own humble beginnings, Gord gave from the heart so that all children could enjoy experiences like YMCA Wanakita in Haliburton, where he sent his own son every summer for outdoor adventure.
